Signa: Redefining Brick Cladding with Unprecedented Creative Freedom

Vandersanden Group's Innovative Design Wins Golden A' Design Award

Signa, a unique brick cladding system by Vandersanden Group, is revolutionizing architecture with its limitless design possibilities. This innovative product, which won the Golden A' Design Award, offers architects a new level of creative freedom while maintaining the durability and weather resistance of traditional brickwork.

Signa's unique properties lie in its precast panel, where durable brick slips are mounted onto a weather-resistant stone sheet. This innovative design allows for a wide range of choices in sizes and colours, and even the creation of 3D effects. The system can be installed on different rear structures, such as aluminum or wood, providing further flexibility.

The realization of Signa involves cutting brick slips from original facing bricks, which maintain the same characteristics as the facing bricks in accordance with Belgian Benor and European CE standards. These slips are then attached to a weather-resistant and dimensionally stable carrier, such as a 'Rockpanel' stone panel, using a strong, weather-resistant glue.

Technical specifications of Signa include brick slips made of full standard handformed bricks with various dimensions, and a carrier plate cut out of Rockpanel stone plates. The measurements depend on the weight and pattern of the chosen design. The brick slips are glued on the carrier with a 2-component glue.

The development of Signa faced several challenges, particularly in finding components that are weather-resistant, suitable for the building industry, and compatible with the brick slips. However, through extensive internal and external testing, Vandersanden Group was able to find the right components for this product.

Signa was first exhibited at Belgium's largest building trade fair, Batibouw in Brussels, in February 2013. Since then, it has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award for its innovative approach to brick cladding and its significant impact on the world of architecture.
